I can tell you a little story about the 'traffic rack'.

Bruce Chapman was one of the operators - great guy - but he hated getting up out of his chair or reaching over too far to spin the rack in order to pick-up or deposit messages. So, he had a yard-long metal ruler that he would poke the rack with - to get it to spin, so that he could locate the proper message and retrieve it without too much effort. Over the years, this left his 'mark' on the rack - all those scratches and dents you can see towards the middle of the vertical edges in the wood were his work (IMG_0258 in particular if you look closely).
