Given our determination not to license private sector entities to operate AIS base stations, we take this opportunity to clarify that maritime support stations are authorized to undertake on-land testing and installation of AIS equipment pursuant to Section 80.653(b)(2) of the Commission's Rules, 47 C.F.R. § 80.653(b)(2), and may transmit on Channels 87B and 88B for that purpose on a secondary, non-interference basis to operational maritime communications.
